英語48個音標(biāo)，元音20個，包括單元音和雙元音，輔音28個，包括清輔音和濁輔音。音標(biāo)是記錄音素的符號，是音素的標(biāo)寫符號。它的制定原則是：一個音素只用一個音標(biāo)表示，而一個音標(biāo)并不只表示一個音素。
