1. 表示“聽(tīng)眾”、“觀(guān)眾”,是集合名詞,用作主語(yǔ)時(shí),其謂語(yǔ)可用單數(shù)或復(fù)數(shù)。如:
The audience is [are]listening attentively. 聽(tīng)眾都在聚精會(huì)神地聽(tīng)著。
The audience was [were] enjoying every minute of the performance. 觀(guān)眾對(duì)演出非常欣賞。
有時(shí)由于語(yǔ)義的需要,分別用單數(shù)或復(fù)數(shù)更合適。如:
The audience was enormous. 觀(guān)眾人很多。
The audience are requested to be in their seats by 8:00. 觀(guān)眾要在八點(diǎn)前都入座。
2. 形容聽(tīng)眾人數(shù)之多或少,通常用 large, small, crowded, thin等形容詞修飾audience。如:
There was a large audience of young people at the pop concert. 流行音樂(lè)演奏會(huì)上有大量青年聽(tīng)眾。
Her lecture had a crowded audience. 她的演講擠滿(mǎn)了聽(tīng)眾。
The speaker had a small but attentive audience. 這位演講者的聽(tīng)眾不多,但很專(zhuān)心。

正:She felt nervous at having to sing before so large an audience [such a large audience].
誤:She felt nervous at having to sing before so many audience.
3. audience 雖為集合名詞,但有時(shí)可用復(fù)數(shù)形式。如:
The audiences were enormous. 聽(tīng)眾特別多。
He addressed audiences all over the country. 他向全國(guó)各地的聽(tīng)眾作地演講。
4. audience 有時(shí)可表示“讀者”。如:
