before的用法

1. 用作介詞，注意以下用法：

(1) 表示時(shí)間，意為“在……以前”，其后只能接點(diǎn)時(shí)間或具有點(diǎn)時(shí)間意義的其他名詞，而不能接一段時(shí)間。如：

I’ll be back before five (o’clock). 我5點(diǎn)前回來。

We arrived there two days before Christmas. 我們于圣誕節(jié)前兩天到達(dá)那兒。

(2) 表示在兩者中選擇其一，意為“寧可……而不愿……”。如：

They would die before surrendering. 他們寧死而決不投降。

True men choose death before dishonour. 大丈夫可殺而不可辱。

2. 用作連詞引導(dǎo)時(shí)間狀語從句，除表示“在……之前”這一基本義外，還有以下用法值得注意：

(1) 表示“寧可……也不愿”。如

They would die before surrendering. 他們寧死不屈。

True men choose death before dishonor. 大丈夫可殺而不可辱。

(2) 表示“不到……就”“還沒有……就”。如：

Before the week was out, they were dead. 那個(gè)星期還沒過完他們就死了。

Before he knew it, his piece of meat had fallen into the water. 他還沒醒悟過來，那塊肉就已經(jīng)掉進(jìn)了水里。

(3) 表示“以免”“免得”。如：

Do it before you forget. 趁早動(dòng)手，免得忘了。

Put down that knife before you hurt somebody! 把那刀子放下，以免傷人!

(4) 表示“（必須）先……才能”。如：

The wrecked car had to be lifted before the driver could be extricated. 那輛撞毀的車子必須先移開，才能救出司機(jī)。

(5) 表示“（多久后）才”“（多久后）就”。如：

It won’t be long before they understand each other. 過不了多久他們就會互相了解的。

It will be a long time before we finish this dictionary. 我們需要很長的時(shí)間才能把這部詞典編譯完。

3. 用作副詞，表示“以前”，注意以下用法：

(1) 與具體時(shí)間連用（置于其后），通常與過去完成時(shí)連用（多見于賓語從句中）。如：

He said he had told her about it two years before. 他說他兩年前就把那事告訴她了。

(2) 泛指“以前”，不與具體時(shí)間連用，可完成時(shí)或過去時(shí)連用。如：

I (have) read the book before. 我以前讀過這本書。

You should have told me so before. 你早就該告訴我了。
